Status Bags was born from a lifetime of creativity, resilience, faith, and the desire to express something meaningful. The founder Maria Chara grew up in the Brazilian countryside, in a home with no electricity or running water, as the ninth of ten children — seven girls and three boys. Her father was a farmer, and her mother was a seamstress who made clothes for family, neighbors and small stores in a nearby village.
Every day, she rode her bicycle 13 kilometers to school. On her way home, she carried fabric sent by the stores for her mother to sew. On her way to school, she delivered the finished clothes, collected payments, and brought them back home. Long before she understood entrepreneurship, she was already learning about responsibility, commitment, and service.
Some of her favorite childhood moments were spent beside her mother’s sewing machine. Watching, helping, and learning from her, she developed a deep love for sewing and craftsmanship.
She was the only one among her siblings to pursue an education beyond elementary school. She went to college and built a career in public administration in Brazil, where she had opportunities to attend meetings and training sessions alongside influential leaders.
During those years, everyone wore identification badges around their necks. Guided by her faith, she always placed an image of Jesus on the back of her badge — a small, personal reminder of what mattered most to her.
One day, while at church, she noticed an elderly woman carrying a bag adorned with an image of Jesus. She found it beautiful and deeply meaningful. Later, during an important professional meeting, she was given an unusually large identification badge. Looking at it, an idea sparked: what if a bag could feature the same kind of interchangeable message?
Combining those two inspirations — the image on the woman’s bag and the large badge from work — she envisioned a bag that allowed people to change the front message to reflect who they are.
She went home, crafted one for herself, and started using it. Friends loved it and often asked where they could buy one. When she shared that she had made it herself, some asked her to make one for them. However, with her demanding career, the idea remained a personal creation.
Years later, she met her American husband and immigrated to the United States. At 45, while childless and working as a medical interpreter, she experienced a profound moment of faith. One night, she had two dreams in which God revealed she would become a mother at age 46. One year later, exactly as she had seen in her dreams, she welcomed her son.
She set her career aside to dedicate herself fully to raising him. When he eventually started school, she found herself at a crossroads. She was too young to step back from working, yet returning to the traditional workforce after years away presented a real challenge.
That was when the idea that had been waiting for years came back to life.
Status Bags was born.
In 2025, however, reality hit. She realized she no longer had the professional network, close friendships, language confidence, or resources she once enjoyed in Brazil. Starting a business in a new country felt overwhelming, and she questioned whether she had what it would take to bring this dream to life.
So, she wrote a letter to God. She expressed all her fears and limitations, recalling the words of Moses in Exodus 33:15: “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” She asked God that if He was not with her on this journey, He would either cause her to give up or lead her in a different direction.
What happened next became the defining moment behind Status Bags. God answered her clearly, literally, and immediately:
“I am with you. But when someone buys something from you, they must receive more than what they paid for: My message.”
And that became the mission behind Status Bags.
What is the mission of the brand?
The mission of Status Bags is to create products that carry more than function — they carry meaning. Every Status Bag is designed to help people express who they are, share what they believe, celebrate important moments, and carry messages of hope, encouragement, and purpose. We believe that when someone chooses a Status Bag, they should receive more than a product — they should receive a meaningful experience and a message that connects with their journey.
Who is the bag for — who is the ideal customer?
Status Bags is for women who believe that what they carry can represent who they are.
Our ideal customer is a woman who values creativity, individuality, and meaningful design. She is student, a mother, entrepreneur, professional, dreamer, or someone entering a new season of life. She does not want just another handbag — she wants something personal, something that reflects her story, her values, and the message she wants to share with the world. She is someone who believes that the details we choose to surround ourselves with can remind us of what matters most.
